Outdoor projector enclosures face rain, snow, dust and salt spray. NEMA 12 and NEMA 4 look similar, but they are built for different places. For outdoor projector enclosures, NEMA 4 or NEMA 4X is the correct starting point.

What NEMA 12 Means
NEMA 12 is an indoor industrial rating. It protects against circulating dust, falling dirt, fibers, lint, dripping water and light splashes. It is common in factories and workshops where the air carries dust or oil mist. NEMA 12 cabinets use continuous gaskets and sealed doors, but they are not designed for outdoor weather — they do not stop wind-driven rain, snow or hose spray.
What NEMA 4 and NEMA 4X Mean

NEMA 4 is an indoor/outdoor rating. It protects against windblown dust, rain, snow, sleet, dripping water, splashing water and direct hose spray, and it handles external icing. NEMA 4X adds corrosion resistance — the right choice for coastal areas, chemical plants or any corrosive air.
| Exposure | NEMA 12 | NEMA 4 | NEMA 4X |
| Circulating dust and fibers | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Dripping water, light splash | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Oil and coolant mist | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Direct hose spray | No | Yes | Yes |
| Windblown dust | No | Yes | Yes |
| Rain and snow | No | Yes | Yes |
| External icing | No | Yes | Yes |
| Corrosive environment | No | No | Yes |
| Outdoor placement | No | Yes | Yes |
Shirui outdoor projector enclosures are tested to IP65 and IP66, which overlap closely with NEMA 4 and NEMA 4X protection. They are built for real outdoor conditions, from coastal areas to sand and wind zones.
Why NEMA 12 Fails Outdoors
A NEMA 12 cabinet may look sealed, but outdoor conditions find the gaps. Wind-driven rain hits door seams at an angle. Snow melts into cable entries. Morning dew forms on cold surfaces. Even under a roof, blowing rain can reach the enclosure.
Once moisture enters, it condenses on LCD panels, laser modules and electronics. Cold startup then causes errors. The projector inside is rated for indoor rooms, not for snow and ice — NEMA 12 is not enough for it.
Shirui Enclosures: IP65/IP66 Protection
Shirui builds outdoor projector enclosures from high-quality galvanized plate, stainless steel or aluminum alloy, 1.2 / 1.5 / 2.0 / 3.0 mm thick. The surface is electrostatically sprayed and cured by high-temperature baking, with long service life and no peeling or cracking. The projection window uses ultra-white optical glass with over 95% light transmittance.
Cable glands, unused knockouts and door gaskets are sealed for outdoor use. Internal air passes through a dustproof sponge and an F6 efficiency filter to keep the cabinet clean.

Material Selection
| Material | Best for | Corrosion resistance |
| Galvanized steel (1.2–3.0 mm) | Inland, normal humidity | Good with powder coating |
| 201 stainless steel | Near-coastal, moderate salt | Better; check grade locally |
| 304 stainless steel | Coastal / splash zone | Strong; standard marine choice |
| 316 stainless steel | Direct sea spray / industrial | Best for harshest sites |
Surface Finish and Installation

After degreasing, phosphating and high-temperature curing, a 60–80 μm epoxy-polyester layer stops moisture reaching the steel. For coastal projects we also recommend extra edge sealing around laser-cut openings, stainless fasteners and bottom drain holes.
- Mount so rain runs off, not against a wall — leave about 100 mm clearance behind
- Keep bottom drain holes clear; do not let cables block them
- Avoid mounting directly facing the prevailing wind in a spray zone
- Use stainless brackets — painted-steel brackets corrode and stain the cabinet
- Wipe down twice a year near the coast; inspect the window gasket after big storms
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is galvanized steel enough inland?
Yes, with proper powder coating. Inland rust usually comes from chipped paint, not the steel itself.
Q: 304 or 316 for a seaside installation?
304 is fine for most coastal towns. 316 is worth the premium if the cabinet is within about 500 m of open sea or in heavy industrial air.
Q: Is NEMA 4 the same as IP65?
The protection levels overlap but are not identical. NEMA 4 also covers external icing; IP65 focuses mainly on dust and water. Shirui enclosures are tested to IP65/IP66 and are suitable for outdoor use.
Final thoughts
Outdoor projector enclosures should not use NEMA 12. Choose NEMA 4 or NEMA 4X, or an equivalent IP65/IP66 enclosure. Tell us your installation site — we will recommend galvanized, 304 or 316 for your project.
