Factory Audit Checklist for Projector Enclosure

We’ve supported over 200 projects, shipped products to more than 20 countries and regions, and served over 80 clients worldwide.

A factory audit checklist for projector enclosure suppliers evaluates manufacturing capability, quality control, certifications, production capacity, and supply chain reliability. Use this 25-point checklist to verify sheet metal capability, IP sealing processes, temperature control assembly, testing protocols, and after-sales support before placing your first order.

Why a Factory Audit Matters for Projector Enclosures

Outdoor projector enclosures are precision-engineered products that combine sheet metal fabrication, IP sealing, thermal management, and optical glass. A supplier that cannot control these processes will deliver enclosures that leak, overheat, or fail prematurely—costing you far more than the unit price in projector replacements and site visits.

A factory audit is not about finding the cheapest supplier. It is about verifying that the supplier has the equipment, processes, people, and systems to consistently deliver enclosures that meet your specifications. This checklist covers seven critical areas.

1. Manufacturing Capability & Equipment

Verify the factory has the equipment to produce enclosure parts in-house, not just assemble outsourced components:

  • Laser cutting or CNC punching for sheet metal parts (minimum 3mm steel / 2mm aluminum)
  • CNC bending with precision brakes (±0.5mm tolerance)
  • Welding (TIG/MIG) for frames and structural components
  • Powder coating line with pre-treatment (degreasing, phosphating, curing oven)
  • Assembly area with electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection for electronics
  • In-house tooling for custom gaskets and brackets

Red flag: A supplier that outsources laser cutting, bending, and powder coating has limited quality control and longer lead times.

2. Quality Control & Testing

Ask to see the quality control process and testing records:

  • Incoming material inspection (mill certificates for steel/aluminum, glass transmission reports)
  • In-process inspection (dimensional checks after bending, weld inspection)
  • IP sealing test (water spray test per IEC 60529, at least IP65)
  • Thermal performance test (temperature rise test inside enclosure with projector running)
  • Salt spray test (for coastal/corrosion-resistant models, minimum 480 hours)
  • Final inspection checklist (100% inspection before shipping)

Ask for test reports from recent orders. A reliable supplier will have documented test procedures and records.

3. Certifications & Compliance

Verify the supplier holds relevant certifications:

  • ISO 9001 quality management system
  • CE marking (for European market, including LVD and EMC directives)
  • FCC Part 15 (for electromagnetic compatibility in the US)
  • RoHS (restriction of hazardous substances)
  • IP rating test report (from third-party lab, not just self-declared)
  • Material certificates (RoHS-compliant powder coating, food-safe if required)

Red flag: A supplier that only shows “self-declared” IP ratings without third-party test reports.

4. Production Capacity & Lead Time

Understand the supplier’s capacity to meet your volume and timeline:

  • Monthly production capacity (number of enclosures per month)
  • Current utilization (how much capacity is already committed)
  • Standard lead time (sample: 15–25 days, mass production: 30–45 days)
  • Expedited production capability (rush order surcharge and minimum timeline)
  • Peak season capacity (Q4 is often busy for holiday projection projects)
  • Sub-supplier network (for fans, controllers, glass, and other purchased components)

5. Supply Chain & Material Sourcing

Verify the supplier has reliable material sources:

  • Sheet metal suppliers (qualified steel/aluminum mills, consistent quality)
  • Fan suppliers (branded fans like Sunon, Delta, or EBM-Papst, not generic)
  • Temperature controller suppliers (in-house design or branded industrial controllers)
  • Optical glass suppliers (low-iron ultra-clear glass, ≥93% transmission)
  • Gasket material (EPDM or silicone, not foam tape that degrades in 2–3 years)
  • Safety stock (critical components kept in stock to avoid production delays)

6. Engineering & Customization Capability

For custom enclosure projects, verify engineering capability:

  • In-house engineering team (mechanical, electrical, thermal engineers)
  • CAD/CAM capability (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, sheet metal unfolding software)
  • Thermal simulation (CFD analysis for cooling design)
  • Prototype capability (fast turnaround for first article)
  • Design for Manufacturing (DFM) feedback on your drawings
  • Customization scope (dimensions, color, logo, mounting, accessories)

7. After-Sales Support & Warranty

Evaluate the supplier’s long-term support:

  • Warranty period (minimum 2 years for enclosure, 1 year for electronics)
  • Spare parts availability (fans, controllers, gaskets, glass—how long after purchase?)
  • Technical support (response time, English-speaking engineers, remote troubleshooting)
  • Replacement policy (DOA units, manufacturing defects)
  • Documentation (installation manual, wiring diagram, maintenance guide)
  • Reference customers (ask for 2–3 references in your region or industry)

Red Flags to Watch For

During your audit, watch for these warning signs:

  • No testing equipment on site — if they cannot test IP sealing or thermal performance, they cannot guarantee it
  • Generic fans and controllers — unbranded components fail faster and are harder to replace
  • Foam tape gaskets — degrades in 2–3 years, causing water intrusion; insist on EPDM or silicone
  • No engineering team — if they cannot modify designs or solve thermal problems, custom projects will fail
  • Price too good to be true — if the quote is 30–40% below market, they are cutting corners on materials or testing
  • No reference customers — ask for references and actually call them
