Salt Spray and Corrosion Protection for Projector Enclosure

We’ve supported over 200 projects, shipped products to more than 20 countries and regions, and served over 80 clients worldwide.

Table of Contents

An outdoor projector enclosure sits in rain, coastal salt spray, dust and industrial acid for years. Corrosion often appears first as rust on hinges, screws and around the glass window. Then the seals fail, water gets in, and the projector is at risk. The right material, surface finish and sealing system decide how long the enclosure lasts.

Where Corrosion Attacks First

Corrosion does not wait for the whole cabinet to fail. It starts at weak points:

  • Hinges, latches and lock cylinders.Moving parts scratch the coating and expose bare metal.
  • Edges and cut-outs.Laser-cut edges may have exposed steel if they are not sealed.
  • The glass window flange.Moisture can trap between the gasket and the steel frame.
  • Bottom panel.Standing water and splash accelerate rust.

Material Choice

MaterialBest forCorrosion resistance
Galvanized steel (1.2–3.0 mm)Inland, normal humidityGood with powder coat
201 stainless steelNear-coastal, moderate saltBetter; check grade locally
304 stainless steelCoastal / spray zoneStrong; standard marine choice
316 stainless steelDirect sea spray / industrialBest for harshest sites

Shirui outdoor projector enclosures are made from high-quality galvanized plate, with optional stainless steel or aluminum alloy. Body thickness can be 1.2 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm or 3.0 mm depending on the project.

Surface Finish Matters as Much as Material

Powder coating is not just color. After degreasing, phosphating and high-temperature curing, a 60–80 μm epoxy-polyester layer helps stop moisture from reaching the steel.

Shirui uses electrostatic spraying and high-temperature baking. The finish is designed for long service life with no peeling or cracking. For coastal projects, we also recommend:

  • Extra edge sealing around laser-cut openings
  • Stainless fasteners instead of plated steel screws
  • Drain holes at the bottom so water does not pool

IP65 Sealing and Internal Air Control

IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction. It does not mean submersible, but it does keep rain, snow and salt spray out.

On air-conditioned models, internal air is recirculated. Outside air does not mix with the air over the projector, so salt and dust never get in. Shirui enclosures are tested to IP65/IP66 and use an intelligent control system with temperature and humidity sensors.

Key control logic:

  • Heating starts when temperature is below 5°C and humidity is above 90%.
  • Heating stops when temperature rises above 10°C and humidity falls below 65%.
  • Fan starts when temperature is above 25°C; fan speed changes with temperature.
  • Air conditioner cooling starts above 25°C on models with AC.
  • T230 control board manages cooling, fan, heating and dehumidification.
  • MGE METTLER switching power supply and AC contactor protect the projector.
  • 16A or 10A multi-function sockets are reserved.
  • RS232/485 control is available.

The projection window uses ultra-white optical glass with more than 95% transmittance.

Salt Spray Testing: What the Numbers Mean

Suppliers often quote salt-spray resistance from ASTM B117 chamber testing. As a rough guide:

  • Galvanized steel with good powder coat: 240–480 hours before first red rust
  • 304 stainless steel, properly passivated: 720–1,000+ hours
  • 316 stainless steel with molybdenum: 1,500+ hours, for direct sea spray

Ask the supplier for the actual salt-spray hours on the material and fasteners they will ship — not just the cabinet body. Shirui can provide material and finish options based on your installation site.

Protect the Internals Too

The steel box is only half the job. The AC condenser, fan motors, connectors and power supply are also exposed to humid air. For corrosive sites, specify:

  • Epoxy-coated condenser fins on the AC unit
  • Corrosion-resistant fan motors with sealed bearings
  • Stainless cable glands instead of brass or zinc-plated
  • Dehumidify mode for long idle periods

Shirui enclosures use an F6 efficiency air filter and dustproof sponge. Optional smoke sensors and water ingress sensors add another layer of safety.

Installation Details That Prevent Rust

Even a 316 cabinet can rust if installed badly:

  • Mount it so rain runs off, not against a wall — leave about 100 mm clearance behind.
  • Keep bottom drain holes clear; do not let cables block them.
  • Avoid mounting in a spray zone directly facing the prevailing wind.
  • Use stainless brackets. A painted-steel bracket can corrode and stain the cabinet.

Long-Term Maintenance

  • Wipe down the exterior twice a year near the coast.
  • Check hinge and latch bolts once a year; tighten or replace if rust starts.
  • Inspect the window gasket after any big storm.
  • Touch up chipped paint within a week — rust spreads fast under powder coat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is galvanized steel enough inland?

Yes, with proper powder coating. Inland rust problems usually come from chipped paint, not the steel itself.

304 or 316 for a seaside installation?

304 is fine for most coastal towns. 316 is worth the premium if the cabinet is within about 500 m of open sea or in heavy industrial air.

Does the AC unit corrode too?

The outdoor condenser coil is the weak point. Ask for a coated or finned epoxy coil on marine-grade units.

Can Shirui customize for coastal sites?

Yes. Shirui offers galvanized steel, stainless steel and aluminum alloy, with custom sizes, finishes and mounting options. The intelligent control system can be adapted to local temperature and humidity conditions.

What IP rating do Shirui enclosures have?

Shirui outdoor projector enclosures are tested to IP65/IP66. They are designed to keep rain, snow, dust and salt spray out while maintaining internal temperature and humidity.

Summary

Pick the steel grade for your climate, add a proper powder coating, keep IP65 sealing, and inspect once a year. For coastal and industrial sites, choose 304 or 316 stainless steel and protect the internal components as well. Tell Shirui your installation site — we will recommend galvanized, 304 or 316 for your project.
