How to Choose for Your Environment

Inland and Urban Installations

For most inland cities, residential and commercial areas, galvanized steel with a powder coating is the ideal choice. It provides ample corrosion protection, strong rigidity and a competitive price, which is why it is the default for the majority of projector housing projects. The powder coating adds colour, UV resistance and an extra protective layer against the elements.

Coastal and High-Salt Environments

If the enclosure sits near the sea, on a ship or in an area with heavy road salt, stainless steel is strongly recommended. Salt attacks galvanized coatings much faster, and stainless steel avoids the risk of premature rust. For extreme marine exposure, choose grade 316 rather than 304 for the best long-term protection. The higher initial cost pays off over a longer service life.

Extreme Cold or High Temperature Regions

Temperature alone does not select the material, but the climate should inform the surface treatment and design. In very cold climates, ensure drainage and sealing prevent ice damage and check that gaskets stay flexible at low temperatures. In hot climates, ventilation and shading design matter more than the material choice. Pair the right material with the right climate control, and the enclosure will perform well in any region.

Pole and Roof Mounts

Where weight is critical, aluminum is worth considering. A lighter enclosure reduces the load on the pole and makes installation and maintenance easier, and it can also simplify transport to the site. If the budget allows, aluminum can be a good compromise for weight-sensitive projects.

Whatever material you choose, a proper surface finish extends the enclosure’s life. For galvanized steel, a quality powder coating protects against UV fading and adds colour.
