Standard Float Glass (Not Recommended for Long-Term Outdoor Use)

Low-cost float glass delivers poor light transmission. Ordinary float glass contains iron impurities that give it a slight green tint and typically passes only about 87-90% of incident light, so a projector’s real brightness is quietly reduced at the very first optical element. Continuous UV exposure triggers yellowing and gradual transmittance decay. It only fits temporary indoor applications instead of permanent outdoor installations.

Ordinary Tempered Clear Glass

Special Requirements for UST Ultra-Short-Throw Laser Projectors

The narrow gap between UST lenses and enclosure windows magnifies reflection ghosting. Enough ventilation clearance must be reserved between lens and window during cabinet design. Never let lenses touch glass directly. Sufficient clearance also prevents heat from accumulating between lens and glass, protecting both the optics and the coating. Coastal Salt-Spray Sites

Select salt-spray-resistant AR-coated ultra-white glass. Standard AR coatings peel off within months under high-salinity humid coastal conditions. The upgraded coating resists salt attack and keeps optical performance stable for years near the sea.

Cold Freezing Regions

Adopt low-temperature tempered glass to withstand huge day-night temperature swings and prevent thermal-shock glass cracking. Tempered glass also handles snow loads and hail better than ordinary glass in extreme weather.

Desert Heavy-Sand Environments

Prioritize thickened AR tempered glass. Minimize PC polycarbonate panels due to rapid sand-caused abrasion. Thicker glass provides more stiffness and a longer scratch-free service life where sandstorms are common.

Critical Window Structure Tips for Custom Enclosures

  1. Keep enclosure window cutouts away from projector lenses and reserve ventilation clearance.
  2. Seal glass perimeter with outdoor-grade weather-resistant silicone to maintain IP65 rating without gaps.
  3. Design for independent window removal. Technicians can replace or clean glass without lifting heavy projectors onsite, lowering maintenance work.
  4. Align window angles with projector projection direction to reduce undesired light refraction and preserve image quality.

Common Industry Misconception

“Just use any transparent glass for the window.”

The viewing window is an essential segment of the whole optical path, not merely a simple protective cover. Even excellent thermal control and cabinet construction cannot compensate image degradation brought by low-performance windows. A wrong window can cost thousands of lumens and visible ghosting that no enclosure design can recover. This belief usually surfaces only after onsite ghosting or yellowing forces an expensive retrofit.
