IP65 and IP66 ratings indicate how well an outdoor projector enclosure resists dust and water.IP66 provides higher water protection, helping keep your equipment safe in harsh outdoor conditions.

Video Guide: This video demonstrates the design and functionality of projector enclosures for outdoor applications.

According to IEC 60529, the IP code consists of two digits: the first for solids protection (dust), the second for liquids protection (water).

Dust Protection: IP6X is the highest rating

Both IP65 and IP66 share the first digit “6” – meaning identical dust-tight performance. Test method: the device is placed in a sealed chamber with talc powder (2 kg/m³ concentration), subjected to an air velocity of 2 m/s for 8 hours. After the test,no dust ingress is allowedinside the enclosure. For sensitive optical systems, IP6X is non-negotiable.

Water Protection: Key differences between IPX5 and IPX6

IP65 corresponds to IPX5, IP66 corresponds to IPX6. The table below compares test parameters per IEC 60529:

Key take away:IPX6 delivers 8 times the flow rate and~3.3 times the water pressure of IPX5, enabling it to withstand far more severe water impacts.

Selection Guide: IP65 is sufficient, but IP66 is more robust

  • IP65– Suitable for semi-outdoor or sheltered locations (balconies, awnings, gazebos). Handles normal rain and splashes.
  • IP66– Suitable for fully exposed outdoor environments (rooftop signage, attraction projection, coastal areas, typhoon-prone regions). Withstands torrential rain, high-pressure washdown, and industrial cleaning.

Consider IP66 if any of the following apply:

  • – Frequent heavy rainfall in the region.
  • – Potential for manual washdown (e.g., public area cleaning).
  • – Coastal salt spray combined with high winds and heavy rain (e.g., seaside locations).
  • – Sandy desert areas with high dust and sand storms.

Shirui outdoor Projector enclosures are available in both IP65 and IP66 ratings to suit your needs

Besides IP65 type, Shirui outdoor projector enclosure features an internal circulation design, rated IP66, and withstands high temperature, high humidity, and salt spray. Its core advantage: aclosed-loop system that uses an air conditioner for temperature control –no fans– achieving a fully sealed enclosure.

Choose Shirui’s IP66 closed-loop, fanless enclosure – your projector remains dry and dust-free even in typhoons, heavy rain, industrial washdown, and salt-spray environments.

shirui Pro Tip: When choosing an outdoor projector enclosure, consider the specific environmental challenges of your location. For areas with frequent storms or heavy rainfall, always opt for an IP66-rated enclosure for maximum longevity.
