Choose 24U for a projector plus a few network devices; choose 42U for multiple servers, NVR and redundancy. Check usable depth (at least 1000 mm) and rail-to-rear-door clearance before ordering.

Why cabinet size is an early decision
The wrong cabinet size costs twice: too small and you cannot fit servers or cool them; too large and you pay extra volume, shipping and a bigger AC. In outdoor deployments, size also drives steel weight, mounting load and shipping freight. Pick the right U-count and depth on day one.
When 24U is enough

A 24U outdoor cabinet suits a single projector setup plus a small network stack:
- One or two projectors in a climate-controlled compartment
- One POE switch and a small NVR or media player
- Up to 10 kW continuous IT load, paired with a 15 kW air conditioner
- Wall-mount or pole-mount sites with limited load capacity
It ships as one compact box, costs less to freight and installs faster on a roof or pole.
When you need 42U

Step up to 42U when the site runs real IT:
- Multiple rack servers or a full NVR/switch stack
- 20 kW continuous IT load, paired with a 25 kW air conditioner
- Redundant power, spare slots, or future expansion
- Edge computing, local storage and video wall processors
42U cabinets are floor-standing, need a solid pad and more service clearance, but they let you grow without swapping the whole enclosure.
Usable depth matters more than U-count
A 42U with 800 mm internal depth will not fit a 29-inch Dell PowerEdge server. Before ordering:
- Choose at least 1000 mm cabinet depth for 24U, 1200 mm for 42U
- Subtract rail-to-rear-door clearance — verify the actual usable server depth, not the outer dimension
- Leave room for front and rear door AC units (70 mm intrusion on each door in common designs)
- Check cable routing bend radius behind the rails
Always ask the supplier for a dimensioned drawing showing rail position and rear-door gap.
Other factors that change the choice
- AC placement: side-mounted, rear-door or top units change internal layout
- Shipping limits: 42U boxes can exceed road freight limits; confirm dimensions with forwarder
- Maintenance: 42U needs more working space around it; 24U fits tighter corners
- Budget: 24U saves on steel, freight and a smaller AC
Quick decision guide
| Need | Pick |
| 1–2 projectors + small network | 24U |
| Multiple servers / NVR stack | 42U |
| Up to 10 kW IT load | 24U + 15 kW AC |
| 20 kW IT load or future growth | 42U + 25 kW AC |
| Wall / pole mount | 24U |
| Floor pad, full IT rack | 42U |
Real example: Dell PowerEdge fitment
A Dell PowerEdge server listed as 29 inches deep is not just the chassis. You need rails, cable arms and clearance behind the rear door. A cabinet with 1000 mm outer depth often leaves only about 860 mm usable after the rails, rear door and AC plenum — too short for a 2U power-edge server. For these, choose 1200 mm depth, 42U, and ask the supplier for a dimensioned drawing showing rail-to-rear-door gap before PO.
Shipping and installation notes
- 42U cabinets may exceed standard parcel dimensions; confirm LCL or LTL freight and liftgate delivery
- Floor-standing 42U needs a level concrete or steel pad, not a wooden deck
- Wall-mounted 24U needs wall studs or a reinforced bracket rated for at least twice the loaded weight
- Plan 800 mm of service clearance around the door for filter changes and AC maintenance
Frequently asked questions
Q: Can I start with 24U and upgrade later?
Not in practice. A 24U cabinet is a finished steel box; adding another 18U means a new cabinet. Plan one size up on day one.
Q: Does depth include the projector lens sticking out?
No. The cabinet depth covers internal rails. The lens window is on the front door — check door clearance and lens offset when specifying a custom cutout.
Q: Which U count is cheaper to ship?
24U. It fits standard freight dimensions and often ships parcel. 42U usually needs LTL or container freight.
Final thoughts
Start from the devices you will install in two years, not today. If you are unsure, send us the server model list and we will confirm usable depth and recommend 24U or 42U with the right AC.
